Vascular and interventional radiology team performs renal artery angioplasty when effective, non-surgical high blood pressure treatment and kidney failure repair is needed. About 96 percent of patients with high blood pressure have a type that responds only to medicine. Some patients, however, have narrowed arteries to the kidneys, which cause the problem. These narrowings may be discovered on ultrasound, CT, or MRI scan. In these patients, angioplasty with stent placement may greatly improve or cure the high blood pressure and reduce the need for medicines. In some patients, kidney function is threatened by the blockage, and interventional radiology may prevent the need for dialysis.
