Slave Labor
Around 4 million slaves worked in the southern states, accounting for almost one third of the souths population. The northern states wanted to ensure that slavery would be banned in any new states admitted to the Union. By the 1850s, many had begun to call for the complete abolition of slavery. The southern states threatened to leave the union if this abolition was imposed on them.
