To try this simple science experiment at home, you'll need just a few things: one egg, one cup of vinegar, and a clear jar or glass.

Here's what you do:

1. Pour the cup of vinegar into the jar.
2. Carefully place the egg into the vinegar.
3. Watch what happens. You'll notice bubbles forming around the egg.
4. Let the egg sit in the vinegar for a full day.

After 24 hours, take the egg out and feel it. You'll observe that the eggshell has become soft.

Here's why this happens: Eggs are made up of calcium carbonate, which gives them their hard shell. Vinegar contains acetic acid. When these two substances come into contact, they undergo a chemical reaction, releasing carbon dioxide gas, which is what creates the bubbles you see. This reaction continues until the egg shell's carbon content is depleted. This process usually takes about a day. Once you remove the egg from the vinegar, it feels soft because the carbon has been released as gas bubbles.

For an extra step, leave the egg out on the table for another day and see what happens next.
