Description
Seller-provided details for this listing.
Upper Canada Heritage Farm is looking for a live-in person or couple to assist in its 300 hog operation. Located on 100 acres about one hour southwest of Ottawa, our family raises a heritage breed, the Large Black Pig, on rotating pastures. We have succeeded in helping to bring this remarkable breed back from the brink of extinction by developing a thriving market for their meat in the Nation?s Capital.
We need one or two people (preferably a couple) to live on the farm year round, either in the house or in a 26? trailer on the property. You would each be expected to spend on average about 4-6 hours each day tending the herd. Duties include feeding, watering, bedding, tractor maintenance, electric fencing and barn repairs and maintenance. Opportunities are available for you to create your own market garden, chicken flock, or other agricultural endeavour using our equipment and land.
All living expenses (except food) are covered. You will receive a weekly cash stipend (amount to be negotiated) and will have regular access to a car.
Experience is not necessary. We are looking for a person or couple with enthusiasm, honesty, flexibility, a good work ethic and a positive outlook who want to learn about alternative farming. Ideally, we are looking for a committed person or couple who will be with us for the long term. We may even consider an arrangement for the right person to gradually take over either full or partial ownership of the farm.
The position(s) are available as of mid March 2011. (Respectfully, no children please.)
