Do you want to play percussion like a pro?
I?ve played 100?s of gigs, done recording sessions and studied drumming in Africa. I will teach you great rhythms and the secrets of improvisation.

Lessons are tailored to your needs, whether you are a beginner or intermediate. Ages 5 years-adult. Afro-cuban styles (son clave and rhumba clave) are my mainstay. I will also teach principles of soloing. I am not a djembe specialist but enjoy the instrument and can teach the basics of djembe playing.

I can come to you. Lessons $40/hour (discounts may be available).

I have been playing hand drums for almost two decades, starting with Ghanaian instruments and moving onto afro-latin instruments (primarily congas). In the UK I taught Ghanaian hand drums as well as djembe and samba for diverse clientele including both adults and children. I also played in several groups including an afro-celtic band (which later won Best African Album in the 2006 Just Plain Folks awards), a traditional Ghanaian music group which recorded a soundtrack for BBC TV, and an afro/latin/funk band.

In 1998 I moved to Africa where I played hundreds of gigs in afro-fusion, afro-latin/salsa, funk and afro-celtic bands, including festival gigs in front of thousands, such as the Festival Mundial, Tilburg, Netherlands. I also studied and played with some great drummers there.

I have done several commercial recording sessions, including an album by Kenyan band Yunasi (who won the 2007 BBC Next Big Thing competition) an album by Suzanna Owiyo who was nominated in the Pan-African Kora Music Awards in the ?Most Promising Female Artist? category, and a single by African-American singer Denise Gordon which received an Honorable Mention for the 2003 John Lennon Song Writing Contest.

I have also produced my own electronic music. I moved to Canada in 2007 where I practiced with a hip hop/fusion band. Since the birth of my young son in 2009 I have shifted my emphasis from gigging to teaching.
